FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a gentle correction to an improperly functioning joint within the spine called a subluxation. When the vertebrae (bones of the spine) are positioned incorrectly and functioning improperly they can cause the surrounding nerves and structures to become irritated. This irritation is called a subluxation and causes a change in the way the nerve functions and the body feels. This can create a number of symptoms, including but not limited to: pain, muscle spasms, improper organ function, or even no symptoms at all. A chiropractor is trained to detect and correct these areas of subluxation using gentle and safe adjustments.

What can I expect during my first visits as a patient?

As a new patient in our office, the first thing you will do is meet with the doctor. She will go over your current and past health history with you and get to know your health goals. Based on your consultation, Dr. McGuire will do a specific examination to get to the root of your concerns. We do not have the ability to take x-rays in our office, so should Dr. McGuire feel that x-rays are necessary, she will refer you to one of our trusted locations to have those films taken. As long as there are no contraindications to care, you will receive your first adjustment at your first visit.

On your second visit, Dr. McGuire will sit down with you and discuss the findings from your consultation and exam, as well as answer any questions you may have. She will tailor the care that she recommends to your unique needs.

Are there specific techniques used for chiropractic care during pregnancy?

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis paired with a gentle adjustment that reduces nervous system stress and balances the pelvis, thus reducing tension on the associated muscles and ligaments to optimize the mother’s pelvic function to be better suited for the pregnancy and birth that she desires. It is based on the knowledge that when the pelvis is subluxated, the pelvic opening is decreased and tension is placed on the uterus and surrounding muscles. Reducing this tension supports baby getting into a proper position and improves mom’s chances of having a smoother labor. All of the work that we do is on mom, not baby.

Dr. McGuire has done hundreds of hours of post graduate training in pregnancy and pediatrics and is certified in the Webster Technique.  She is proud to be one of a distinct few chiropractors in the state to hold board certification in pregnancy and pediatrics with the Certification by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics (CACCP).

Does everything crack?

Eggs get cracked, spines get adjusted! Dr. McGuire is highly trained in a variety of techniques and will adapt her care to what your body needs. The pressure needed to adjust a baby, for example, is no more than what you’d need to check the ripeness of a tomato.

Everyone’s body and health journeys are different, so we have several different tools in our toolbox to help you. While Dr. McGuire primarily practices hands on care, she is also certified in instrument based adjusting as well.
